The 1857 Revolt, which started in Meerut as a revolt by the armed force was a major struggle against colonial British rule.

1857 revolt was far more than a mutiny: (1) Widespread participation of masses like artisans, peasants, small zamindars etc. was seen. (2) Hindu - Muslim unity was seen at all levels, Bahadur Shah Zafar was declared as ceremonial head. (3) Delhi was captured by rebels under general Bhakt [illegible]. (4) Major centres like Kanpur(under Nana Saheb), Jhasi under Rani [Lakshmi Bai]
