Introduction

"Caste is not a physical object like a barbed wire, it is rooted in ideologies." ~ M K Gandhi

19 words

Main Body

Dichotomy in public & private life of caste: (1) Caste in defining social hierarchies in public life - example occupational stratification. (2) Occupational stratification - example 901 safariswain-I achari from specific caste (NSK). (3) Dilution of caste in public life post globalisation.

It acts as a barrier because: (1) While public life diffuses the differences, private life reinforces it - vis-a-vis cycle: private life (no difference) choice -> family system reinforces caste -> society. (2) Sometimes dualism of caste in two life rather than dichotomizing prevents annihilation. However, when conformity in public & private life, caste annihilated through Gandhi's & Ambedkar efforts and govt laws to prevent advocates - Prevention of atrocities act 1989.
