Partition of Bengal occurred in October 1905 as per 'Divide and rule' policy of land custom separating Bengal into East (West Bengal and separating slavery Odisha.

Causes of partition of Bengal (1905): (i) Official reason was administrative convenience in governance which was difficult due to large size (ii) Crack people's solidarity by dividing them on Hindu-Muslim, Bengali-Non-Bengali lines (iii) Insist of Muslim league demand for a separate state for Bengali speakers & uts khan pushed for partition. Consequence of partition: (i) Anti-partition movement led by leaders like Aurobindo, Bipin Chandra pal and Tilak (ii) Mass participation for first time since 1857 revolt against British (iii) Strengthen Hindu-Muslim bonds through united salem to each other (iv) Strengthen nationalist sentiment thereby leading to process of 'Indian in making' (v) Dispute over strategy among Moderate and Extremist caused split in Congress in Surat session (vi) Demand for dominion status/swaraj was put forward for first time in 1905 session.
