Traditions refer to customs, thoughts which have historical origin, passed generations to generations. Eg:- Touching feet of parents as respect.

Traditions Impede Change:
1Deep-rooted: Tradition from core values of humans - difficult to change.
2Often associated with religion in which people have faith & fear. Eg: Not allowing women only in temples.
3Not based on scientific facts, data which is "updated over time.
4Leave to social acceptability. Person Following tradition like visiting temple after conducted virtuous.
5Lack of value based education which can challenge outdated discriminatory traditions. Eg: Women focused on care-giving.
Role of Social Legislation in Change:
Social Legislation refers to rules, laws which change social customary practices.
1Reduce ill-practices: Eg:- Sati was abolished by law in 1829,
2Can change practices: Reduction in child privileges post Child Marriage Act, 2006.
3Provide legal basis: To fight against practices like dowry, domestic violence, etc.
However, it has limitations:-
1Doesn't change mindset: activities continue underground. Eg:- as per NFHS3, 18-30 years women married before 18 (NFHS4)
2Enforcement power is limited.
