Main Body

Uses of RRE:

1New age technologies - like Quantum Computing, data centres, etc.
2Use in permanent magnets- neodymium, yttrium Vanadium, etc → Used in EVs.
3Need in renewables: To make wind turbines, hydro turbines.
4Use in Semi-conductors: Gallium, Germanium provides substrate
5Use in communication technologies: Supplies, mobiles, cits → Needed for defence, trade, etc.

Environmental Impact of "Extraction"

1Deep-sea mining -Threatens marine organisms via light, noise pollution.
2Passivity of sediment plume in oceans which can choke fisher.
3Resource intensive process - need huge waters, electricity, etc.
4Forests will have to be cleared.
5Some RRE trapped under permafrost Eg- Greenland, North Sea, etc.

Way Ahead:

1International Seabed Authority should formulate sustainable guidelines.
2Develop sustainable mining technologies like micro robots for mining.
