Despite having huge coal reserve in our country, why do we import millions of tons of coal ?
- 1It is policy of Govt. of India to save its own coal reserve for future use and import now from other countries for present use.
- 2Most of the thermal plants in our country are coal based and they are unable to get sufficient coal supply from our coal mines.
- 3Steel plants require large quantities of coking coal which we do not have, coking coal is to be imported from other countries.

- A1, 2 and 3
- B2 and 3 only
- C1 and 2 only
- D1 and 3 only
Explanation
India imports coal because domestic mines cannot fully meet the demand of its coal-based thermal power plants, and because Indian coal is overwhelmingly non-coking, so steel plants must import coking coal — statements 2 and 3 are correct. Statement 1 is false: India has no policy of conserving its own coal reserves by importing for present use. Hence the answer is 2 and 3 only.
