Twinkling of a star is due to:
General KnowledgePhysics
- AInterference of light
- BRefraction of light
- CPolarization of light
- DDiffraction of light
Explanation
Starlight passes through many layers of Earth's turbulent atmosphere with constantly varying density and temperature, so it undergoes continuous atmospheric refraction. This makes the star's apparent position and brightness fluctuate rapidly — the twinkling effect. Planets twinkle far less because they present an extended disc whose many light paths average out the fluctuations. Interference, polarisation and diffraction of light are not the cause.
