Explanation

Sound waves are longitudinal: air particles oscillate parallel to the direction of propagation (compressions and rarefactions), which is why sound needs a material medium. Light waves are transverse electromagnetic waves: the electric and magnetic fields oscillate perpendicular to the direction of travel, so light can propagate through vacuum.
