Explanation

The thyroid gland needs iodine to synthesise thyroxine (T4), which contains four iodine atoms per molecule. Iodine deficiency impairs thyroxine production and causes goitre, while excess production causes Graves' disease. Sodium chloride, potassium chloride and cholesterol play no direct role in thyroxine synthesis.
