Explanation

Washing soda, sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), is used for softening hard water because it precipitates the dissolved calcium and magnesium salts as insoluble carbonates. Sodium hydrogen carbonate, sodium hydroxide and sodium sulphate are not used for water softening. The softening compound is sodium carbonate (option A).
