Soil impoverishment means the soil has become poor in plant nutrients — depleted of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and organic matter through over-cropping, leaching or poor management. It is distinct from soil erosion (physical removal) or deposition of new material. Hence deficient in plant nutrients.
