Human insulin molecule is composed of one a-chain having 21 amino acids and one b-chain having 30 amino acids. How many functional insulin genes occur in adult humans ?

Explanation
Although the mature insulin molecule has two chains — an A-chain of 21 amino acids and a B-chain of 30 amino acids — both are cleaved from a single precursor polypeptide, proinsulin. In the human genome there is only one functional insulin gene, INS, located on chromosome 11. The two chains are therefore products of one gene, not two. Hence adult humans carry one functional insulin gene.
