Explanation

In paper manufacture, "degumming" (delignification/pulping) removes lignin and gums from the raw fibre using caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) — the basis of the soda pulping process. Sulphuric and nitric acids are not used for this stage, and bleaching powder is used later for bleaching the pulp, not for degumming.
