Explanation
Methyl isocyanate (MIC) was used at Union Carbide's Bhopal plant as an intermediate in the manufacture of the carbamate pesticide carbaryl, sold as Sevin. MIC reacts with 1-naphthol to produce carbaryl, an insecticide. It was not used for dyes, detergents or explosives at that factory. On the night of 2-3 December 1984, leaking MIC gas caused the Bhopal disaster, one of the world's worst industrial accidents. The gas was therefore a pesticide intermediate, option (D).
