Passage-I Much rhapsodical nonsense has been written about the "Mona Lisa" and her enigmatic smile, and there have been endless speculations as to her character and the meaning o f her expression. It is all beside the mark. The truth is that the "Mona Lisa" is a study of modeling. Leonardo da Vinci had discovered that the expression o f smiling is much more a matter of modeling o f the cheek and of the forms below the eye than o f the change in the line of the lips. It interested him to produce a smile wholly by these delicate changes o f surface; hence the mysterious expression.
The author o f the above passage has examined 'Mona Lisa' from
- Aan idealistic angle
- Ban imaginary point of view
- Ca purely artistic angle
- Da scientific and realistic standpoint
Explanation
The author dismisses romantic speculation about the smile as 'rhapsodical nonsense' and declares it 'all beside the mark'. Instead he offers a technical, factual analysis: the smile results from the modeling of the cheek and the forms below the eye. This is a scientific and realistic examination of how the effect was achieved, not an idealistic, imaginary, or purely artistic one. Hence option (D) is correct.
