Alloys such as brass (copper and zinc) and steel (iron and carbon) are homogeneous mixtures, or solid solutions, of a metal with other metals or non-metals; they are not chemical compounds with fixed stoichiometry. They need not consist solely of metals, and most alloys contain no carbon at all. Hence the correct statement is that alloys are mixtures.
