Explanation

Hydrogenation of alkenes (addition of H₂ across the C=C double bond) is carried out in the presence of finely divided nickel (Raney nickel) at moderate temperature and pressure. Copper, zinc and aluminium are not effective hydrogenation catalysts for alkenes.
