A milkman adds a small amount of baking soda to milk. This makes the pH of the milk
general-sciencechemistry
- Astrongly alkaline
- Bweakly alkaline
- Cstrongly acidic
- Dweakly acidic
Explanation
Fresh milk has a pH of about 6.6, slightly acidic because of lactic acid. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is a mild alkali, and adding a small amount neutralizes some of the lactic acid, shifting the pH just above 7 into the weakly alkaline range. A small quantity cannot make it strongly alkaline, and it certainly does not make it acidic. Hence the milk becomes weakly alkaline.
