Liquid water is denser than ice due to
general-sciencechemistry
- Ahigher surface tension
- Bhydrogen bonding
- Cvan der Waals forces
- Dcovalent bonding
Explanation
Ice is less dense than liquid water because hydrogen bonding locks water molecules into an open hexagonal lattice in ice; on melting the lattice collapses and the molecules pack more closely. Surface tension, van der Waals forces and covalent bonding do not explain this anomaly. Hence (B).
